2024 Westfield State Men's Cross Country News

After the conclusion of the winter sports season, Westfield State University Athletics continues to hold the top spot in the 2024-25 Howard C. Smith Cup standings, awarded annually to the institution with the best overall athletics program in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Westfield State University Athletics recognized over 300 student-athletes with the celebration of the annual Director of Athletics 3.0 ceremony held on Wednesday night during halftime of the Owls men’s basketball game.

Owls student-athletes’ Jarrod Ledvina, Shea Hamel, Molly Finnegan, Dylan Clark, Tom Onorato, Katie Slattery, Ben Dawe, and Emma Nihill were all named to the 2024 MASCAC Fall Sportsmanship Team.

After a strong 2024 fall season, Westfield State Athletics leads in the 2024-25 Howard C. Smith Cup standings, which is awarded annually to the best overall athletics institution in the league.

Westfield State cross country picked up a pair of awards in the final week of the 2024 season

Nathan Sylven (Wrentham, Mass.) finished 42nd to help propel Westfield State to finish 17th as a team in the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional meet on Saturday.

Westfield State sophomore runner Nate Sylven received conference yearly honors this past weekend, securing a spot on the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference team at the league’s championship meet from Doyle Conservation Center in Leominster, Mass. on Saturday.

John Nekitopoulos was first home for the Owls in 131st place in 26:28.6, a personal-best time on the 8-kilometer course

Westfield State University sophomore Nathan Sylven (Wrentham, Mass.) finished in 13th place in the individual rankings to lead the Westfield State men’s cross country team’s efforts at the 28th Annual James Earley Invitational Cross Country race at Stanley Park on Saturday.

Owls teams will wear pink ribbons on their uniforms for home games from Oct. 11 through 19, and SAAC will host a walkathon at the Jerry Gravel Track on October 17.

Sophomore Nate Sylven (Wrentham, Mass.) led Westfield State with a 71st place finish as the Owls placed 16th out of 21 teams at the Keene State Invitational from Keene N.H. on Saturday morning and afternoon.

Amidst the rain and mud, Westfield State men’s cross country placed top 30 of 44 teams in the UMass Dartmouth Invitation on Saturday, September 21.

Nekitopoulos was the first man across the line for the Owls at the Trinity Bantam Invitational on Saturday at Wickham Park in Manchester, Conn., finishing seventh overall in the 149 runner field.
