WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State women's cross country junior Shea Hamel (Longmeadow, Mass.) and first-year men's cross country athlete Gavin DaFonte (Southampton, Mass.) both received conference recognition this past weekend.
Hamel was named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Runner of the Week after cruising to an individual victory at the Keene State Alumni meet on Saturday. Hamel crossed the tape first on the two-mile course with a time of 12:00.73, assisting the Owls to a team victory for the third consecutive season at the meet.
DaFonte, in his first collegiate meet, posted a 29th place mark out of a field of 75 runners, finishing the 5K course with a time of 17:29. The men's cross country team earned a third-place finish at the season opening meet at Keene State.
Both men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Hartford, Conn. for their next meet as part of the Trinity College Invite on Saturday, September 7 at 10:30 A.M.
