
WESTFIELD, Mass. –Westfield State first-year Kenney Rogers (Springfield, Mass./ Springfield Int. Charter) came off the bench to score 28 points and grab 12 rebounds to lead Westfield to a 106-69 win over SUNY-Cobleskill in a non-conference men's basketball game at the Woodward Center on Wednesday evening.
Westfield State led 40-35 at halftime, then blew the game open with a program-record 66 points in the second half, shooting 56 percent from the floor in the half.
The Owls improve to 2-1, while Cobleskill is now 1-2.
Westfield went on a 14-2 run in the first four minutes of the second half, capped by a layup from Angel Price-Espada (Cambridge, Mass./Pope John XXIII).
Price-Espada scored the 1000th point of his collegiate career, spanning junior college and Westfield State, with a bucket on a drive with 12:55 left in the first half. He finished with eight points and six steals.
Westfield got 21 points from Lid Moreland (Bridgeport, Conn./Bunnell), and 12 from A.Z. Allah (Springfield, Mass./Macduffie). 14 players got in the game for the Owls with 11 finding the scoring column. The Owls forced 29 turnovers from the Flying Tigers which Westfield converted into 37 points.
Cobleskill was led by 20 points and 10 rebounds from Jermaine Wheeler (Manhattan, N.Y.), but Wheeler was limited to just 21 minutes as he was saddled with a third foul midway through the first half and picked up a fourth early in the second half.
Quanire Green (Albany, N.Y) added 14 points, Devin Dennard (Elmira, N.Y.) 10 and Chace Peterson (Troy, N.Y.) 10 for the Tigers. Marquay Tanksley grabbed 11 boards.
Westfield will next be in action this weekend, travelling to Oneonta, New York for the Michael A. Freilich Classic at Oneonta State University. Westfield will face Mississippi University for Women in the opening round on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
