Top seeded Westfield State University hosts #3 Worcester State in the 2022 MASCAC men's basketball championship game at 1:00 p.m. at the Woodward Center:

HOW THEY GOT HERE: Westfield topped Fitchburg State 80-58 in the semifinals, after receiving a first round bye. Sophomore guard Kuany Teng scored a career-best 30 points for the Owls in the semifinals, drilling six of eight three pointers. Worcester pulled a minor upset in the semifinals, using a big second-half to tip #2 seed Salem State 77-68. The Lancers were a 79-53 winner over Bridgewater State in the 1st round of the tournament. Chris Cardoso scored 21 points to lead the Lancers in the semifinals.
WHAT IT MEANS: The winner of the game is the 2022 conference champion, and receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
RECENT HISTORY: Westfield swept the season series with the Lancers this year, 89-65 in the first meeting and 71-65 in the second. The Owls topped Worcester, 81-77 in the 2020 MASCAC title game, the last time the league had a championship game prior to the pandemic. Hamilton and Rennis are the only two members of the Owls who played in the 2020 game, with Rennis punctuating the win with an emphatic dunk late in the game.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Westfield State junior forward Brendon Hamilton leads the Owls with 15.2 points per game and ranks second in the nation in rebounding at more than 14 per game. Senior guard Justin Rennis adds 13.5 points per game, and Teng is getting 11 points per night while shooting 42.6 percent behind the arc. JT Thompson chips in with 10.6 points per game.
Worcester State features a balanced attack with five players getting nine or more points. Cardoso leads at 15.3 points per game, sophomore center Ryan Rubenkas adds 11.8, and three-point threat Sam Dion nets 11.3 points per game while shooting 37 percent from downtown. Erik Bjorn is the second-leading rebounder in the league at 11.8 per game.
