Full Spring Slate of Games for Owls Athletics this Weekend
Westfield State athletics is back in action for another spring weekend which features Owls softball and women's lacrosse at home while men's and women's track and field begin the outdoor season and baseball continues its non-conference schedule on the road.
WESTFIELD, Mass. — Westfield State athletics is back in action for another spring weekend with all teams in action featuring two teams at home and three on the road.
THE LINEUP:
Saturday:
- Softball vs Vermont State Lyndon – Sullivan Field at 2:00 P.M.
- Men's and Women's Track and Field at Wesleyan 10:00 A.M.
Sunday:
- Women's Lacrosse vs #16 Amherst College – Alumni Field at 3:00 P.M.
- Baseball at Springfield College (DH) – 12:00 P.M.
From the campus of Westfield State, the Owls softball team hosts Vermont State Lyndon for a doubleheader on Saturday that starts at 2:00 P.M. from Sullivan Field. The Owls come into this one with a 10-2 record and winners of their last three games, including a doubleheader sweep over Skidmore on Wednesday. In twelve games this season, the Owls have scored 99 runs in just 12 games with a team batting average of .402. Hannah Wodecki (Southampton, Mass.) leads the team with a .535 batting average (fifth in the MASCAC), with 13 runs scored (fourth in the MASCAC), and 11 RBI (third in MASCAC).
Joining softball on Saturday will be the outdoor season opener for both men's and women's track and field as the teams travel to Middletown, Conn. for the J. Elmer Swanson Spring Classic meet at 10:00 A.M. Last season, both teams delivered strong performances during the outdoor season as the women's team won the MASCAC outdoor title while the men turned in a second place team performance.
On Sunday, women's lacrosse will host their second straight home game against #16-ranked Amherst College at 3:00 P.M. from Alumni Field. The Owls have put together a strong week of play, winning back-to-back games over Johnson & Wales (18-7) then Western New England (20-9) to enter the contest with momentum. Senior Natalie DeMaio (Westwood, Mass.) recently entered third on the all-time career goals list and enters Sunday's game after tallying 11 goals over the previous two contests. She leads the Owls with 20 goals. Emma Prattson (Tolland, Conn.) leads the team in points at 26 with ten goals and 16 assists.
On the road Sunday, Owls baseball travels to Springfield college for a doubleheader that starts at noon. The Owls are 9-2 coming into the weekend as they come off a win over Hartford on Wednesday and an 18-7 win in seven innings against Elms College on Tuesday. Devin Slattery (Ware, Mass.) is hitting .421 batting average, which is the fifth best in the conference. Last season when these two teams met, they split the double header as the Owls took game two 4-2.
