Softball Sweeps VSU-Lyndon
Westfield State’s Sarah Hough knocked out five hits in the doubleheader, and the Owls got home runs from Rylie Camacho and Janna Jose in winning 7-3 and 14-1 over Vermont State University-Lyndon at Sullivan Field on Saturday afternoon.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State's Sarah Hough (Southwick, Mass.) knocked out five hits in the doubleheader, and the Owls got home runs from Rylie Camacho (Attleboro, Mass.) and Janna Jose (Middlefield, Conn.) in winning 7-3 and 14-1 over Vermont State University-Lyndon at Sullivan Field on Saturday afternoon.
Hough was 3-4 with a double and two runs scored to key Westfield's offense in game 1.
Lyndon got on the board first, tallying twice in the first innng after leadoff base hits from Ann Watkins (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Lindsey Gannon ((Beverly, Mass.). Watkins scored on an RBI ground out from Blake Southworth (Bethel, Vt.) , and Claudia Knapp (Howell, N.J.) plated Gannon with a sacrifice fly to center.
Westfield answered with five runs in the bottom of the first, as the first five hitters in the Owls lineup reached, with Mia Alfonso (Pittsfield, Mass.) delivering a three run double before scoring on Christina Ciampa's (Rockville, Conn.) double to right center.
Hough and Hannah Wodecki (Southampton, Mass.) clubbed back-to-back doubles in the second to tack on another run, and Camacho ripped a line drive home run to left center through a steady crosswind in the sixth to cap the scoring for the Owls.
Starter Gianna Conte (W, 2-0) worked 4-2/3 innings to earn the win, scattering nine hits and allowing two earned runs. Westfield's Katherine Canty (Natick, Mass.) came out of the bullpen to work out of a bases loaded jam with a strikeout to end the fifth and tossed 2-1/3 scoreless innings for her first save of the season.
Gannon finished 2-3 with two runs scored ans a stolen base for the Hornets. Starter Bailey Quire (L, 0-6) ( Gainsville, Fla.) settled in after a rough first inning to toss a complete game while striking out three.
In game 2, Jose picked up the win in the circle, working four innings while allowing just one run, and launched a two-run homer to left field as part of a seven run third inning for the Owls.
Abby Clark (Uxbridge, Mass.) stung the ball all four at bats reaching on a pair of doubles and two errors, stealing a base and scoring three runs. Westfield had six different players with multi-hit games, as Sarah Bingham (Reno, Nev.) drove in three runs and scored twice and Alyssa Slack (Westfield, Mass.) had a pair of RBI singles.
Angelina Vartuli (Middletown, Conn.) worked a 1-2-3 fifth inning in relief to end the game.
Watkins had a pair of hits for the Hornets and scored the lone run in the third inning. Shyanne Glencross (Tilton, N.H.) added a pair of hits. Riley McNamara (L, 0-3) (Manchester, N.H.) went the route in taking the pitching loss.
Westfield State is now 12-2 on the season, while Lyndon dips to 0-11.
Westfield will be back in action at home on Wednesday, hosting Anna Maria in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
