Warsame Wins NED3 Triple Jump Title
Warsame’s big day highlighted the Owls performances, which included Eliza Lee (Walpole, Mass.) adding all New England honors in the women’s triple jump with a top mark of 11.70 meters to place fourth.
WESTFIELD, Mass. --- Westfield State sophomore Ali Warsame (Chelsea, Mass.) won the men's triple jump title at the New England D3 Track and Field Championships at the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. on Saturday.
Warsame's leap of 14.62 meters (47'11.75") was a personal best and vaulted him into 10th on the NCAA Division III performance list pending other meet results this weekend, putting him in a prime position to qualify for the NCAA Championship meet. Warsame's best mark came on his final attempt of the day, reversing course after a tough day yesterday when he fouled on all three attempts in the long jump.
Warsame was almost 6 inches better than his closest competitor, and about 6" shy of Owls Hall of Famer Miles Woodhouse's school record which was set in 1990.
Warsame's big day highlighted the Owls performances, which included Eliza Lee (Walpole, Mass.) adding all New England honors in the women's triple jump with a top mark of 11.70 meters to place fourth. That mark is 23rd on the national performance list pending complete weekend results. Lee finished third in the long jump yesterday to earn a pair of All-New England honors on the weekend.
The Owls were not done, as the 4x800 relay team of Lorcan Bergeron (Medway, Mass.), Gordon Johnson (Hanson, Mass.) Rowan Gottschall (Simsbury, Conn.), and John Nekitopoulos (West Springfield, Mass.) ran 7:55.87 to place seventh and earn All-New England honors by virtue of finishing in the top eight.
Westfield's women's 4x800 relay of Tealei Chandonnet (Dracut, Mass.), Molly Kennedy (West Springfield, Mass.), Brynne LeCours (Haverhill, Mass.) and Reese Stevens (Agawam, Mass.) turned in a season-best mark of 9:52.47 to place ninth and just outside the awards.
Nathan Sylven (Wrentham, Mass.) placed 10th in the men's 3000 steeplechase, Julianne Kelly (Natick, Mass.) ran a PR of 11:56.86 in the women's 3000 steeple to place 11th, and Bronwyn Pinsly (Las Vegas, Nev.) placed 11th in the women's discus throw.
The Westfield men finished 22nd among 34 scoring teams with 12 points. Wesleyan won the meet with 80. The Owl women placed 24th among 39 scoring teams with 11 points. Tufts topped the meet with 94.
