During the 2016-2017 Season, Westfield State’s Men’s Ice Hockey team will partner with the You Can Play Project to help ensure equality, respect and safety for all athletes, without regard to sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
You Can Play, an NCAA initiative and an official partner of the NHL, is a social activism campaign dedicated to the eradication of homophobia in sports, centered on the slogan, “if you can play, you can play.”
You Can Play works to guarantee that athletes are given a fair opportunity to compete, judged by other athletes and fans alike, only by what they contribute to the sport or their team’s success.
You Can Play seeks to challenge the culture of locker rooms and spectator areas by focusing only on an athlete’s skills, work ethic and competitive spirit.
On January 21, 2017, Westfield State’s Ice Hockey team will host its first ever You Can Play game, donning rainbow colored jerseys to support LGBT equality and raise awareness of You Can Play’s mission. Leading up to the game, the team will be holding a fundraiser in an effort to provide You Can Play with the support it needs to change the culture of sports.
Your gift to Westfield State’s drive will fund the Owls' You Can Play game and additional proceeds will go to The You Can Play Project; to support athletes, staff, coaches, fans, and leagues across North America to provide slur and harassment free locker rooms and promote a culture or respect and inclusion, regardless of sexual orientation or other discriminatory factors.
