WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State women's basketball was doomed by a slow start on Sunday.
The Owls took no such chances on Tuesday night, as they swooped to a 32-2 lead after one quarter on the way to a 79-46 win at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass.
Westfield led 12-0 after five minutes, then closed the half on an 18-0 run that extended to 20-0 early in the second quarter, all but ending any suspense the game may hold.
The Owls forced 24 turnovers in the first quarter alone, limiting the Lyons to just five shots from the floor. Westfield forced 57 turnovers in the game, a program record.
Westfield State had four players score in double-figures, led by 13 each from Jordan Grant and Olivia Hadla. Caroline Galvani netted 12 points and Hannah Sheldon 10 as the Owls had 15 players find the scoring column. Morgan Berthiaume dished out seven assists for Westfield.
Helena Robinson led Mount Holyoke (0-4) with 16 points.
Westfield improves to 3-1 on the season. The Owls will host the Westfield Gas and Electric Tip Off Tournament this Friday and Saturday. The Owls will face Utica (NY) College in the first round on Friday at 5:30 p.m., with Wellesley and St. Lawrence squaring off at 7:30. The consolation and championship games will be on Saturday afternoon.
