WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State softball split a pair of games in Florida on Sunday, posting a 7-2 win over St. Joesph's (Conn.) before falling to Bethany (W.V.) by a 5-1 score.
In the opener, Westfield struck for four runs in the third inning, getting a quartet of RBI singles from Hannah Wodecki, Cassidy Latour, C O'Donnell and Rachel Brewer-Karimi to take a 4-1 lead.
Sarah Hough finished 2-4 with a double and three RBI for Westfield. Gianna Conte (W, 1-0) started and worked four innings to secure the win. Joss Mettey picked up her first save in relief.
In the nightcap, one bad inning was the Owls undoing in falling to a 6-0 Bethany ballclub.
The Bison scored four times in the fifth inning to break open a 1-1 game.
Abby Clark was the lone repeat hitter for the Owls. Angelina Vartuli took the loss in relief of starter Katherine Canty. Mettey worked 1-2/3 scoreless innings in relief. Westfield is now 3-1 on the season.
