WESTFIELD, Mass.  –  Westfield State hit three home runs in the opener and the Owls got a win and a save each from Stephanie Scoville and Katherine Canty as the Owls swept Salem State by scores of 6-0 and 6-2 in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Westfield State softball field on Sunday afternoon.

Westfield improves to 16-7-1 on the season and 5-1 in the league, while Salem dips to a 8-14 overall and 4-4 in the conference.

Abby Clark got the offensive barrage going for the Owls with a 2-run blast to right center field in the third inning.  Sarah Bingham added a towering fly ball solo home run to center in the fourth, and Hannah Wodecki sparked a three-run sixth as she blasted a one-out solo shot to center in the bottom of the inning.  Mia Alfonso added a 2-run double off the wall in left field to cap the scoring.

Canty (W, 3-2) started and worked four innings, allowed two hits and struck out five before yielding to scoville, who came out of the bullpen dealing and fanned four in three innings while allowing just one hit to earn her fourth save of the season.

In the nightcap, Scoville and Canty reversed roles, as Scoville (W, 8-2) started and tossed four innings, allowing three hits and two runs (but no earned runs before departing with a 3-2 lead.  Canty earned her second save of the season by getting the last nine outs, allowing two hits and walk in the top of the seventh before getting a ground out to end the game with the bases loaded for the Vikings.

Jordan Lummus led off the game with a triple to right field and scored on an error on the play to stake the Owls to an early lead.   Lummus finished 2-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in.

The Owls' senior centerfielder reached the 100 hit mark earlier this week, and now has 102 hits in her career.

Wodecki added three hits and an rbi, and Bingham drove in a run with an RBI single in the first as Westfield jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, before finally tacking on three more runs in the sixth.

Westfield will be back in action tomorrow, hosting a doubleheader against MCLA.
