Owls Win Three Events, Men’s Track and Field Place Second at Massasoit Invitational
Westfield State men’s track and field won three individual events in part to the performances from Dylan Clark (Bellows Falls, Vt.), Nathan Sylven (Wrentham, Mass.), and Theo Yetman (Franklin, Mass.) as the Owls placed second at the Massasoit Invitational from Springfield, Mass. on Saturday afternoon.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State men's track and field won three individual events in part to the performances from Dylan Clark (Bellows Falls, Vt.), Nathan Sylven (Wrentham, Mass.), and Theo Yetman (Franklin, Mass.) as the Owls placed second at the Massasoit Invitational from Springfield, Mass. on Saturday afternoon.
Overall, Westfield was victorious in two track events and one field event as Clark was the leading Owls performer in field events, placing first in the weight throw at a toss of 14.44 meters. He was also top five in the shot put, finishing fourth after launching a final toss at a distance of 13.23 meters.
Sylven paced Westfield in the distance events, crossing the tape in 15:55.20 for a runaway first place finish in the 5000. Yetman, a first-year runner for the Owls, delivered a top mark in the 400, blazing to the finish line in 51.73 seconds for the event win. Yetman also turned in a strong third-place finish in the 200 at a time of 23.39 in what was an impact weekend for the Franklin, Mass. native.
Sophomore Ali Warsame (Chelsea, Mass.) captured a second-place mark in the triple jump with a leap of 12.38 meters, and also notched a fourth place jump in the long jump at 6.45 meters.
Westfield had three finishers within the top five in the long jump event, headlined by sophomore Daniel Shea (Longmeadow, Mass.) who earned second with a leap of 6.45 meters. Warsame was fourth, then first-year Brandon Paquette (West Springfield, Mass.) added fifth for the Owls at 5.99m.
Joining Clark in the top five of the weight throw was first-year Dan Kruta (Ludlow, Mass.) who placed fourth with a toss of 12.72 meters.
Other notable performances for the Owls came from senior Scott Porter (Boylston, Mass.) who crossed the finish line in second place in the 5000 behind Sylven, posting a time of 16:27.09. Rowan Gottshall (Simsbury, Conn.) was also second in his respective event, earning a time of 1:27.52 in the 600.
Springfield College won the meet with a total of 240 points with Westfield earning the second-most points with 134, edging Union (N.Y.) which totaled 116 points.
Westfield State will be back in action next weekend as the Owls travel to Smith College on Saturday.
