Volleyball Drops Opener to Rivier, 3-1

WESTFIELD, Mass.  –  First-year Sydney Cummins (Nicholasville, Ky.) made a strong collegiate debut as she led Westfield State University with 10 kills, but the Owls fell to Rivier (NH) University, 3-1 in the season opener for women's volleyball at the Joel Dearing Classic at Springfield College on Friday afternoon.

The Raiders (1-0) prevailed by set scores of 25-21, 14-25, 25-19 and 25-21.

Sarah Bingham added six kills for the Owls, and sisters Hannah and Emma Nihill (Chandler, Az.) each had five.  Julia Dangel-Garcia (Ashland, Mass.) handed out 20 assists for Westfield, while Allie Hill (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) led with 21 digs.

Allie Rivera led the Raiders with 10 kills.  Hannah Raab vexed the Owls with 11 service aces.

Westfield State (0-1) is back in action in Springfield tomorrow with matches against the hosts at 10 am, followed by a date with Keene State.
