WESTFIELD, Mass. — Westfield State men's soccer first-year Ryan Viana (Framingham, Mass.) earned conference honors this past week as she was named the MASCAC Rookie of the Week after serving as a key contributor in the Owls victory over Salem State this past weekend.
The Owls finished off the regular season with a 3-1 victory over MASCAC opponent Salem State and in that game, Viana set the tone by opening the game's scoring within the first ten minutes of the match.
Viana, a first-year midfielder for the Owls, scored the opening goal for Westfield in Saturday's match. The ball started in the possession of teammate Dominic Cirelli (Springfield, Mass.). Cirelli saw an opportunity with the ball at his feet and served up the ball into the box in the direction of Viana who headed one home to put the Owls in front 1-0.
Viana's goal adds to his tally to move his career goal total to three along with three assists for a combination of nine points on the year. Viana is tied for 16th in the conference on assists and is tied for 22nd in total points as a freshman.
Viana and the Owls have earned the second seed in the MASCAC Tournament and will face the highest remaining seed of first round winners that will begin on Wednesday, November 6. The Owls will play a MASCAC Semifinal match on Alumni Field on Friday, November 8 at 7 p.m.
