WESTFIELD, Mass. – Western New England midfielder Tyler Lewis (Suffield, Conn.) scored twice to lead the Golden Bears past Westfield State 5-2 on Friday afternoon in a non-conference game from Springfield, Mass.
The Owls, playing their third game in four nights, sit at a record of 2-2 after the first full week in the 2024 season. The Golden Bears improve to 2-1-1 on the campaign.
The Golden Bears tallied three goals in the opening ten minutes of the match. Lewis opened the scoring at the 3:29 mark, then a minute later, Mike Milazzo (Old Lyme, Conn.) doubled the WNE lead. Shay O'Neill (Belchertown, Mass.) capped the scoring burst, then Lewis found the back of the net for the second time to put the game out of reach.
In the second half, junior Matias Otero (Rye Brook, N.Y.) logged his first goal of the season as an Owl at the 75-minute mark, then in the closing minutes of the contest, Miguel Fortich (Springfield, Mass.) buried his second goal of the season after tallying his first of the year on Wednesday against Elms.
Luke Theroux (Chicopee, Mass.) started in goal for Westfield, collecting three saves while taking the loss. Western New England outshot the Owls 20-9 in the game and held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Westfield State (2-2) will have a few days off before returning to game action as the Owls wrap up their four-game road swing against Sage on Tuesday night at 7:00 P.M.
