WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State got career-best scoring performances from Melissa Gray (Peabody, Mass.) and Alyssa Camara (Quincy, Mass.) as the Owls ran to a 103-84 win over Regis College in a non-conference women's basketball game on Wednesday night in Weston, Mass.
The Owls, the nation's highest scoring team a year ago, got 24 from Gray and 15 from Camara as the team improves to 3-1 on the season. Gray connected on 4 of 7 shots from behind the arc, while Camara finished 6-7 from the floor and 2-3 from downtown.
Westfield led 54-45 at the half after forcing 18 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.
The Owls turned up the pressure in the second half, opening the third quarter with an 11-0 run to build a 20 point lead, and led 89-61 after three quarters.
Westfield blistered the nets with 15 three pointers on 15-31 (48.4 percent) shooting from long range.
Five Owl players finished with double-figure scoring, as Lucy Barrett (Mt. Greylock/Williamstown, Mass.) and Kierra McCarthy (Ludlow, Mass.) each finished with 14 and Allison Hester (Sutton, Mass.) added 11.
Regis was led by 22 points from Sam D'Angelo, and Valerie Martin added 15 for the Pride, which fell to 0-4 on the season.
Westfield will next travel to New York University for a 1 p.m. tip off on Saturday.
