Men’s Track and Field Take Part in Coast Guard Invite

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore Johnny Ware (Wilmington, Mass.) cracked the Division III top-50 performance list with a first-place mark in the javelin as the Westfield State men's track and field team travelled to the Coast Guard Academy Spring Invitational on Saturday afternoon from New London, Conn.

Ware turned in a throw of 52.72 meters to top the chart in the javelin which had over 20 competitors in the event.

Jordan Stallworth placed second in a field of 42 qualified runners in the 100-meter dash, sprinting to the finish line in 11.17 seconds to tally a second-place mark to top the list of finishes for the Owls on the day. He also earned tenth in the 200m at a time of 23.14 seconds.

Gordon Johnson (Hanson, Mass.) paced the Owls in the middle-distance events, tallying a sixth-place finish in the 800m with a time of 2:00.73.

First-year athlete Nathan Sylven (Wrentham, Mass.) registered an eighth-place mark in the 5000m, crossing the tape in 15:57.61. 

In the field events, Shane Clark (Bellows Falls, Vt.) in Colby Ranck (Chicopee, Mass.) both collected fourth-place finishes in their respective events. Clark recorded the fourth-longest toss in the javelin at a distance of 50.34m and was also eighth in the discus toss (35.80m). Ranck leaped to a distance of 13.18m in the triple jump and added ninth place in the long jump (6.52m).

Other notable performances in the field events came from Dylan Clark (Bellows Falls, Vt.) who placed seventh in the shot put with a toss of 12.27m. Ali Warsame (Chelsea, Mass.) placed within the top ten of performers in the long jump, posting a mark of 12.41m for ninth overall.

Westfield State will host the Jerry Gravel Invitational for their next meet which will be held on Saturday at 10:00 A.M. from Westfield, Mass.
