WESTFIELD, Mass.   – Westfield State junior William Canty (S. Grafton, Mass.) will earn All-America honors in the decathlon after finishing seventh in the nation at the NCAA Division III National Championship meet at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio on Friday.

Canty entered the final day of the 2-day event in 12th place.  He started the day by finishing sixth in the 110 hurdles, earning 797 points, which vaulted him to ninth place in the competition.

He continued to record strong performances throughout the day, posting a sixth place result in the pole vault, clearing 4.20 meters (13-9.25"), and then capped the competition by placing fifth in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:40.72, earning 676 points and securing his spot on the podium.

Canty finished with 6,683 points, 82 points off his school record total set earlier this season.

The top eight finishers in the event will receive All-America honors from the USTFCCCA, which will be formally announced later this week.

Central College's (Iowa) Will Daniels won the decathlon title with a score of 7,427 points.

Canty's finishes give the Owls two points in the team standings, where they currently sit 31st in the scoring.

Westfield State will be represented again tomorrow, on the women's side of the meet, as Lexi Popp (Westford, Mass.) will compete in the 400 meter hurdles final.
