WESTFIELD, Mass.  – The Owls used six different goal scorers in an offensive explosion, as Westfield State defeated Becker College 6-2 in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at Amelia Park Ice Arena.

The Owls got on the board early after Daniel Backstrom (Helsinki, Finland) slammed home a rebound shot only 24 seconds into the game, putting Westfield State up 1-0.

Westfield State would extend the lead after Wyatt Trumbley (Campbell River, B.C.) finessed one passed the Hawk goaltender to make it 2-0 Owls.

But Becker would come storming back when Stephen Wolf (Somersworth, N.H.) would bank a shot of an Owls defenseman to cut the lead to 2-1. Only a minute and a half later, the Hawks would add another from Kevin Morello (Monroe Township, N.J.) to even the game at two a piece.

The tie did not last long, however, as Jake Ratcliffe (Canterbury, New Zealand) put the Owls up 3-2 off a nice feed from Justin Alves (Woburn, Mass.) just before the end of the period.

Westfield State would tack on three goals in the third from Robert Neuwirth (Zlin, Czech Republic), Danny Ferri (Chelmsford, Mass.), and Johnny Orlando (Georgetown, Mass.) to secure the 6-2 victory.

Westfield State outshot Becker, 43-29 in the contest. Thierry Messervier (Montreal, Quebec) had 27 saves for the Owls, while Cody Foster (Saugus, Calif.) collected 37 for the Hawks.

With the win, Westfield State improves to 4-5-2 overall, while Becker drops to 2-11-1.

The Owls resume play this Saturday as they host Salem State in the first MASCAC action of 2019, puck drop scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
