Plymouth Stops Owls, 8-2

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Senior Chris Zuccaro (Hudson, N.H.) and junior Matt Volonnino (Hackettstown, N.J.) each scored two goals en route to an 8-2 victory over Westfield State University in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men's ice hockey game at the Amelia Park Ice Arena Saturday night.

The Owls are now 5-11-1 overall and 3-8 in MASCAC play while the Panthers improve to 15-3-1 on the season and 11-1 in conference action.

Plymouth potted a pair of goals early in the contest, while Westfield State's senior Jeremy Young (Lynnfield, Mass.) netted one of his own to make it 2-1 after the first 10 minutes of play.

The Panthers went on to score twice more in the first period with back to back goals from Zuccaro to extend their lead to 4-1.

Westfield State responded at 8:56 in the second period as sophomore Daniel Backstrom (Helsinki, Finland) found the back of the net after a pass from freshman Cam Tobey (East Falmouth, Mass.) to make it 4-2.

Just minutes later Plymouth State's freshman JR Barone (West Chester, Penn.) redirected a pass from freshman Jake Gerbner (Havertown, Penn.) to increase their lead to 5-2.

The Panthers would go on to score three more times in the third period with two goals from Volonnino and another from freshman Christian La Croix (Northford, Conn.) to clinch the 8-2 victory.

Westfield State hosts Framingham State on Tuesday, January 30th in a MASCAC matchup at 7:35 p.m. Plymouth State will travel to Worcester State on Thursday, February 1st for a conference game at 7:00 p.m.
