WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Westfield State Owls volleyball team sailed past the visiting Salem State Vikings in three sets (25-17, 25-18, 25-18) at the Woodward Center on Wednesday, Sept. 29.
The win puts the Owls at 2-1 in the MASCAC and 3-12 overall. Salem drops to 1-10 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Bridgette McAndrews (Longmeadow, Mass./ Longmeadow) paced the Owls with 17 kills and 10 digs on the night. Ashley and Shawna Crowley (Billerica, Mass./ Billerica Memorial) both chipped in eight kills in the win. Sophomore setter, Julia Dangel-Garcia (Ashland, Mass./ Ashland), connected on 38 assists to fuel the offence.
Westfield State captain, Jess Haradon (Mansfield, Mass./ Mansfield), posted a game-high 29 digs. Prior to the match Haradon was recognized for reaching 1,000 career digs the previous weekend at Framingham.
Salem State was led offensively by Genevieve Kempster's (Hopedale, Mass./ Blackstone Valley Technical) six kills. Three Vikings posted double digit digs, Danielle Sheehan (Walpole, Mass./ Walpole) had 20 while Michelle Le (Woburn, Mass./ Woburn Memorial) and Eva Haralabatos (Melrose, Mass./ Melrose) each had 11. Haralabatos finished with 13 assists.
Westfield controlled the service line, connecting on seven aces compared to the Vikings' one. Liv Elie (Rockland, Mass./ Rockland) led the charge with three.
Both teams travel this weekend for nonconference matches on Saturday, Oct. 2. Westfield goes to Roger Williams (1:00 p.m.) and the Vikings head to Western Connecticut State for a tri-match playing the host at 1:00 p.m. then Castleton State at 5:00 p.m.
