Women's Track and Field Takes Second at Gravel Invitational

WESTFIELD MA — The Westfield State Owls' women's 4x400 meter relay team's win capped ban eventful day at the Jerry Gravel Invitational on Saturday at the Gravel Track and Alumni Field in Westfield, Mass.

Westfield took second place in the team scoring with 137 points.  Utica College won the meet with 224 points, with Mount Holyoke third with 45.

The relay team of Eliza Lee (Walpole, MA), Anjalina Lubarsky (Ludlow, MA), Paige Moroney (Sterling, MA), and Savannah Campbell (Walpole, MA) capped off the meet with a season best time of 4:24.13.

The Owls started the relay out trailing Utica's team who maintained the lead for the first three legs of the race. A strong performance from third leg Moroney, started to close the gap but it was Lubarsky who turned the tide. Taking the handoff several seconds behind the Pioneers, with 200 meters to go in the last leg, Lubarsky turned on the jets and passed the competition. She distanced herself from the second place runner by six seconds and gave the Owls a win.

In the 100m, Delaney Parker (Orange, MA) set a personal record of 12.79 seconds with a first place finish. Moroney came in second with a time of 12.91.

Competing in triple jump, Lee finished third with a distance of 10.96 meters. In the 400 meters Lee finished second with a time of 1:03.06. The race came down to the last straight away where Lee was able to make the last push to come in second.

In the 1500m, Shea Hamel (Longmeadow, MA) and Molly Kennedy (West Springfield, MA) worked together to take second and third in the event. Hamel finished with a time of 5:04.64 and Kennedy finished with a time of 5:08.34. They ran side by side through the race as they chased first place and pulled ahead of the fourth place runner. 

In the 5000m, Hamel finished third with a time of 19:14.94. Kennedy finished fourth with a time of 19:44.62.

In the 100m hurdles, Campbell set a season best time of 18.33. Campbell also ran the 400m hurdles where she placed third and recorded a season best time of 1:14.93.

The Owls honored their seniors before the meet, recognizing Campbell and Moroney and their families.

The next meet for the Owls is Saturday April 20 at Trinity College.
