Women’s Track and Field Places Second in Season-Opening Meet

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State women's track and field athletes' Eliza Lee (Walpole, Mass.), Delaney Parker (Orange, Mass.), and Shea Hamel (Longmeadow, Mass.) all won individual events to lead the Owls to a second-place finish in the season-opening Springfield College Invitational from Springfield, Mass. on Saturday afternoon.  

The Owls racked up 112.5 points to stay well ahead of third-place Rhode Island College (64 points). Springfield College won the meet with a total of 253.5 points.

Lee paced the field in the 600 meter with a time of 1:48.88. She also turned in a second-place performance in the triple jump to close out the afternoon, leaping to a distance of 10.35m. Kerin Johnson (Weymouth, Mass.) was close behind Lee in the 600-meter run, finishing with a second-place tally by crossing the tape in 1:54.51.

Hamel led a deep field of 20 runners in the 3,000 meter, posting a time of 11:02.50. She also picked up a fourth-place finish in the mile run with a time of 5:34.62. Teammates' Molly Kennedy (West Springfield, Mass.) and Brynne LeCours (Haverhill, Mass.) were the next Owls to cross the finish line in the event with Kennedy nabbing sixth place (11:35.16) and B. LeCours placing seventh (11:38.67).

Parker's first collegiate indoor track meet got off to a successful start, securing the top leap in the long jump at a distance of 4.82m. She also placed fourth in both the 60-meter dash (8.13) and the 200-meter run (27.59).

Emily Ottomaniello (Agawam, Mass.) finished within the top three in the long jump with a mark of 4.51 meters, earning a third-place tally for the Owls.

First-year sprinter Devin Whalen (Marblehead, Mass.) added a third-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles for the Owls, crossing the tape in 10.02 seconds.

In the final track event of the afternoon, the women's 4x400 relay team of Lee, Savannah Campbell (Walpole, Mass.), Whalen and Paige Moroney (Sterling, Mass.) placed third out of eight relay teams with a time of 4:34.50.

Westfield State women's track and field will participate in the Pioneer Winter Classic on Saturday, December 9 for their next meet.
