WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State junior Amy O'Sullivan (Greenfield, Mass.) won three events to lead the Owls to a third place team finish at the 2021 MASCAC women's track and field championships.
O'Sullivan coasted to a win in the 10,000 meters to open the meet. O'Sullivan ran 44:12.89 in what amounted to a morning run. O'Sullivan was leading the country in the event earlier this season, though today's meet was about accumulating team points over fast times.
She will look to run a fast qualifying time for the NCAA Championship meet at the All-New England Meet or a last-chance qualifying meet in a few weeks.
O'Sullivan also won the 1500 meters in 4.56.51, and capped off her meet with the league title in the 5000 meters in a time of 19:38.21.
In total, O'Sullivan ran 16,500 meters – more than 10 miles in her three events, scoring 30 points for the Owls.
Westfield State athletes won three additional individual MASCAC Championships.
In the 3000 Steeplechase, the Owls' Mia McDonald (Westfield, Mass.) was the MASCAC Champion in 12:46.48. He sister Moira McDonald (Westfield, Mass.) won the league title in the 400 with a time of 1:01.27.
Westfield senior Mackenzie Connor (Chelmsford, Mass.) was the league champion in the pole vault clearing 2.75 meters.
Damiona Reid (Springfield, Mass.) placed second in the triple jump with mark of 9.88 meters. The Owls finished 2-3-4-5-6 in the event to rack up maximum team points. The Owls 4x100 relay took second place at the meet as well.
Bridgewater State won the meet with a team score of 198.5
Bridgewater State swept the top two spots in the 100 hurdles, with Allison McDonough winning in 15.91, followed by Meg McCullough. McCullough also won the title in the 400 hurdles in 1:11.56.
The Bears' Jamela Foster's throw of 39.79 meters won the hammer, with teammate Ashley Garvey just behind her at 38.21 meters. Foster doubled up with a throw of 37.00 meters to win the discus.
A late rally at the top of the home straight from Bridgewater's Nicole Major won the 800 in 2:26.70. Teammate Ashley Schepis followed her move to place second.
Bridgewater took the top three spots in the high jump, headlined by a by 1.60 meter height from league champ Abigael Peterson.
The Bears won the 4x100 relay and closed the meet with a decisive win in the 400 meters in 4:18.37 seconds.
Worcester State was the meet runner up with a score of 154 points.
For Worcester, Odelia Konadu topped the shot put 12.09 meters.
Bernice Mensah won the long jump with a leap 5.57 meters, with teammate Maureen Grady (5.19m) in second. Mensah was also the conference champion in the triple jump at 10.92 meters.
The Lancers swept the top three spots in the 100 meters, with Abigail McGregor winning in 12.70, followed by Mensah and Elena Pellegrini. That trio also partnered with Maureen Grady to take the circuit's title in the 4x100 relay in 49.30 seconds.
McGregor doubled up in winning the 200-meter title as well.
Riley Sanderson was the MASCAC champion in the javelin with a best throw of 36.94 meters.
Fitchburg State finished fourth with 70 points and Framingham State was fifth with team score of 16 points
Qualified athletes will compete next at the All-New England Championships, May 14-15 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in New Britain, Connecticut.
