Women’s Soccer Grounded by #21 Cortland

WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Westfield State women's soccer team suffered a 6-2 loss against #21-ranked SUNY Cortland on Saturday afternoon as part of the Cortland Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The game was moved up to 2:00 P.M. in advance of potential inclement weather later in the day.

The Owls fall to 1-3 on the season while the Dragons improve to 2-1-1 overall.

Cortland scored the first five goals of the game from five different players to open up a 5-0 lead before first-year forward Kiana Muratsuka (Mililani, Hawaii) buried her first goal as an Owl after firing a shot at the top-right corner of the net from a sharp angle. Junior Jaida Cochran (Middleboro, Mass.) supplied the helper for Westfield's opening score.

Junior Delaney Parker (Orange, Mass.) extended her scoring streak to three games, tallying her fourth goal of the season in the 77th minute, scoring in similar fashion to Muratsuka to conclude the scoring on the afternoon for Westfield.

The Dragons added a sixth and final goal in the 88th minute off the foot of Katie Rowan (Newtown, Conn.).

Cortland held a heavy shot advantage throughout the game, out-shooting the Owls 34-13 in the contest. Julia Robak (Chicopee, Mass.) was busy in net, stopping 12 shots on goal. Kristen Spendal (Dumont, N.J.) saved two of four shots on net for the Dragons.

Westfield State travels to Keene State on Wednesday for a 6:30 P.M. start time before finally returning to Alumni Field for the home opener to begin MASCAC play against Mass. Maritime on Saturday at 12:00 P.M.
