20th-Ranked Bowdoin Stops Owls, 17-9

WESTFIELD, Mass.  –   Sophia Sudano scored four goals and added an assist to lead 20th-ranked Bowdoin College women's lacrosse to a 17-9 win over Westfield State University in a non-conference game at Alumni Field on Sunday afternoon.
 
Bowdoin improved to 4-2 with the win, while Westfield State is now 3-2.
 
The Polar Bears jumped out to a 5-0 lead on the strength of two Anna Kelly goals in the first 10 minutes of play before Kiely Hafensteiner got the Owls on the board with 56 seconds left in the first quarter.
 
Westfield State rallied in the second quarter, winning the period by a 4-2 count to trim the Polar Bears lead to 8-5 at the half.   
 
The Owls netted two of the first three goals in the third period, with Natalie DeMaio tallying off of a feed from Victoria Paras before Nicole Rinkus netted her 3rd of the day to trim the lead to just 9-7 with 10:37 left in the third quarter.
 
From there, Bowdoin rattled off seven straight goals to take command, moving the ball effectively with Fiona Bundy picking up assists on four of the seven goals, consistently feeding the ball into the middle of the fan.
 
Westfield State junior goalkeeper Kara Banagan made 17 saves while allowing just 10 goals in relief of starter Sydney Smith.
 
Bowdoin split the game between its three goalkeepers, as Sophie Brett (5 saves) Izzy Cisneros (4 saves) and Sophia Rutman (4 saves) each played approximately 20 minutes.
 
Charlotte Howie added three goals and an assist for Bowdoin, with Bundy tallying a goal and four assists and Colleeen McAloon adding two goals and two assists.
 
For Westfield Rinkus and DeMaio each finished with three goals, while Hafensteiner, Kelly Gearin and Megan Bailey each adding a goal. Paras posted a pair of assists.
 
Westfield will be back in action on Wednesday night, playing at Connecticut College.
