Donohoe, Owls Dominate Early to Defeat Fitchburg State 17-5

Westfield State's Sam Donohoe (Pepperell, Mass.) scored her 100th career point as the Owls defeated Fitchburg State 17-5 on a chilly Thursday night at Alumni Field. The Owls jumped out to a 9-0 advantage and held Fitchburg State scoreless in the first half. Cassidy Connolly (Woburn, Mass.) scored twice in the    9-0 run capping the run with a free position goal with 11:04 left in the first half.

Fitchburg (1-1, 1-1 MASCAC) rallied, scoring four of the first five goals in the second half, to trim the lead to 10-4 on a Julia Miele (South Hadley, Mass.) free position goal. Donohoe scored back-to-back goals late in the second half, scoring the 100th point of her career with 4:11 left in the game.

Connolly led Westfield (1-1, 1-1 MASCAC) with three goals and three assists. Donohoe and Morgan Burnham (Jeffersonville, VT) each had three goals and an assist.

Fransesca Reyes (Malden, Mass.) made 15 saves for Fitchburg, and Miele led the Falcons with three goals. Madison Alves (Braintree, Mass.) added a goal and an assist.

The Owls will visit Fitchburg State in a rematch on Saturday at 11:00 A.M. The second game of the series will be a non-conference game. According to the MASCAC's return to play plan, the first game between two conference opponents will count in the conference standings and for postseason seeding.
