WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Westfield State University junior goalkeeper Maria Woodall (King Phillip/Norfolk, Mass) was named the 2018 MASCAC women's lacrosse player of the year, the league announced on Tuesday.

Woodall was one of eight Owls named to the all-conference teams, and coach Jeff Pechulis was named the league's coach of the year.

Junior Midfielder Sydney Lambert (Hanover, Mass.) and defender Caroline Arket (Arlington/Pouquag, N.Y.) were named to the first team alongside Woodall.

Attackers Samantha Coyle (Weymouth, Mass.) and Alexa Tonelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) midfielders Sam Donohoe (North Middlesex/Pepperell, Mass.) and Marissa Nimeskern(Hanover, Mass) and junior defender Olivia Overdahl (Milford, Mass.) were named to the second team.

The Owls dominated league play with a 7-0 mark in the regular season, then shut out Worcester State in the league semifinals and defeated Framingham 17-10 to win the conference title.

Westfield will next play in the first round of the NCAA tournament against Morrisville State (N.Y.) on Saturday, May 12 at Gettysburg, Pa.

Woodall led the league in goals against average (8.26) and save percentage (.565) and total saves (183) while leading Westfield to a 17-2 overall record, a school record for wins in a season.

"I'm overwhelmed," said Pechulis. "It's a great move by our league to recognize a defensive player as the player of the year. Maria has worked very hard and has surpassed every expectation that the team or I had for her."

Woodall is the Owls primary goaltender for the first time this year, after sitting behind All-ECAC 'keeper Mimi Khampaeng as a freshman, and splitting time in net last season. Woodall was named the MVP of both the 2017 and 18 MASCAC Championship games. She stopped 16 shots in the title game this season.

"She has always had talent and drive, and the constant work and refinement to her game has really brought out her best," said Pechulis. "Her range has improved in covering all the corners of the net, and she can hit targets 55 or 60 yards away with her throw. No one on the team works harder than she does, and in fact it's a point of emphasis where the team reminds themselves that they all need to be working as hard as their goalie does."

Lambert was the Owls leading scorer with 51 goals and 5 assists for 56 points, as well as 57 draw controls.

Arket, a junior, leads the team with 24 caused turnovers and ranks second (to Woodall) with 35 ground balls.

Coyle (25-18-43) and Tonelli (38-3-41) helped to power the Owls balanced offensive attack.

Donohoe (27-9-36) and Nimeskern (23-8-31) are part of a deep Owls' midfield, and help out in the possession game with 35 and 51 draw controls respectively.

Overdahl grabbed 30 ground balls and forced 11 turnovers as part of an Owls defensive unit that yields just 7.7 goals per game to its opponents.

Lambert and Nimeskern earned all-league honors for the third time each, while Arket was chosen for the second straight season.
