Woodall Leads Owls to Shutout Win in Semifinals


WESTFIELD, Mass. - Westfield State University's junior goalkeeper Maria Woodall (Norfolk, Mass. / King Philip) helped lead the women's lacrosse team to an ultra-rare 16-0 shutout victory over Worcester State in the semi-finals of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) women's lacrosse tournament on Thursday evening.

Woodall played the first 51:16 minutes in goal for the Owls, stopping eight shots and earning the win.

The Owls improve to 16-2 overall and continue their school record for wins in a season.

Worcester State completes its season with a record of 11-8.

Eight different Owls tallied goals in the first half of play. Junior Marissa Nimeskern (Hanover, Mass.) started the scoring just 28 seconds into play. Junior Sydney Lambert (Hanover, Mass.) added another marker just 32 seconds later after a pass from senior Stephanie Godek (West Springfield, Mass.) to gain the quick 2-0 lead.

Westfield State dominated the first half of play, as Alexa Tonelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Hunter Zackaricz (Northampton, Mass.), Maddie Bartkus (Marshfield, Mass.), Elizabeth Navoni (Mansfield, Mass.), Hayley Rodriguez (Melrose, Mass.), and Sam Donohoe (Pepperell, Mass. / North Middlesex Regional) each added goals in the half to lead 13-0.

The Owls played possession for most of the second half and were never threatened.

Westfield State was led offensively by Lambert, who scored a game-high four goals and Tonelli, who tallied three of her own. Godek added two assists in the win.

Lancer's senior Mackenzie Little (Marlboro, Mass.) had a team-high five shots on goal, but Woodall was quick to stop each.

Freshman goalkeeper Chloe O'Brien (Sturbridge, Mass. / Tantasqua Regional) took the loss in net for Worcester State. She stopped seven shots on the evening.

Westfield held a 31-11 edge in shots, a slim 22-18 advantage in ground balls, and a 12-6 advantage in draw controls.

The Owls will host Framingham State in the MASCAC Tournament Championship game on Saturday, May 5 with a 3:00 p.m. start.
