Springfield Gets Past Owls, 17-13


WESTFIELD, Mass. - Senior attacker Shelby Corsano (Bourne, Mass.) scored five goals and added an assist to help lead Springfield College to a 17-13 non-conference victory over Westfield State University at Alumni Field Wednesday night.

The Owls are 8-1 on the season while the Pride improve to 6-5 overall.

Westfield State's senior Hunter Zackaricz (Southampton, Mass. / Northampton) led the Owls with three goals while junior Sydney Lambert (Hanover, Mass.), sophomore Sam Donohoe (Pepperell, Mass. / North Middlesex), junior Marissa Nimeskern (Hanover, Mass.) and senior Rachel Testa (Westminster, Mass. / Oakmont) each tallied two goals.

Senior Kayla Schroeher (Riverhead, N.Y. / Mercy) and junior Taylor Kane (Woburn, Mass.) each scored four goals to help lead the Pride while senior Ann Mahoney (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) added two goals and junior teammate Allie Goddard (Acton, Mass.) added four assists and a goal.

The Pride jumped out to a 6-1 lead with about 15 minutes left in the first half. Westfield State responded with a 4-0 run of their own capped off by a free position goal from Donohoe at 7:55 to make it 6-5.

Back to back goals from Mahoney extended Springfield's lead to 8-6. The Pride ended the first half with a 9-6 lead over the Owls.

Springfield College quickly extended their lead after a 5-2 run to begin the second half.

After some back and forth action, Westfield State scored three straight goals of their own, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.

Springfield College held a 37-35 advantage in total shots and also held a 20-12 advantage in draw controls.

Junior goalkeeper Maria Woodall (Norfolk, Mass. / King Philip) made 14 saves in net for the Owls while sophomore goalkeeper Brenna Keefe (Acton, Mass. / Acton-Boxborough) made 17 saves in the win.

Westfield State will travel to Salem State on April 7th for a MASCAC game at 6:00 p.m.

Springfield College will travel to the United States Coast Guard Academy on April 7th for a conference match at 12:00 p.m.
