Owls Outrun Brewers, 20-18


PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Westfield State University's junior Sydney Lambert (Hanover, Mass.) and senior Brooke Williams (Wilbraham, Mass. / Minnechaug) each scored a goal in the final minutes of the game to secure the 20-18 victory over Vassar College in a women's lacrosse non-conference game at Ross Park in Port Charlotte, Florida Thursday morning.

Westfield State improves to 5-0 on the season while Vassar College is now 1-3 overall.

With the game tied four times throughout the first 18 minutes of play, the Brewers grabbed a 12-11 lead to end the first half.

Westfield quickly responded with a goal from sophomore Sam Donohoe (Pepperell, Mass. / North Middlesex Regional) just a minute and a half into the second half to tie the game 12-12. About two minutes later, senior teammate Samantha Coyle (Weymouth, Mass.) scored an assisted goal to gain the 13-12 lead.

Vassar College went on a 4-0 run before Westfield State followed with a 5-0 run of their own to lead 18-16 with 11 minutes left in the game.

Brewers' senior Storm Sideleau (Contoocook, NH) responded with back to back unassisted goals just 30 seconds apart to tie the game at 18.

Lambert and Williams found the back of the net at 3:26 and 1:42 to secure the 20-18 victory.

Junior Marissa Nimeskern (Hanover, Mass.), Lambert, and Donohoe led the Owls with three goals apiece.

For the game, Westfield State held a 38-32 advantage in shots and also had the advantage in ground balls, 23-16.

Owl's junior goalkeeper Maria Woodall (Norfolk, Mass. / King Philip) earned the victory and made 11 saves in net.

Senior goalkeeper Emily Chancey (Hollywood, Fla.) made 10 saves in net for the Brewers.

The Owls will be back on the field on March 21st as they host Keene State at 7:00 p.m. at Alumni Field.
