Owls Fly Past Falcons, 13-3


WESTFIELD, Mass. - Westfield State University's junior goalkeeper Maria Woodall (Norfolk, Mass. / King Philip) made 15 saves in net to help lead the Owls to a 13-3 Massachusetts Athletic State Collegiate Athletic Conference victory at Alumni Field Saturday afternoon.

The Owls are 8-0 on the season and 1-0 in the MASCAC and continue the best start to a season in program history. The Owls' eight game win streak is the second longest in school history. The Falcons are now 5-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Owls' senior Samantha Coyle (Weymouth, Mass.) led the Owls with three goals and three assists while junior Alexa Tonelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) tallied two goals of her own.

The Falcons found the back of the net three times with goals from junior Anna Gagnon-Burch (Putney, VT / Brattleboro Union), sophomore Sarah Napolitano (Peabody, Mass. / Peabody Veterans Memorial), and sophomore Tracy Long (Georgetown, Mass.).

Senior Brooke Williams (Wilbraham, Mass. / Minnechaug) got the Owls on board with 25:19 to play in the opening period with an assist from Coyle to lead 1-0.

Fitchburg State's Gagnon-Burch responded with a goal of her own at 19:56 to tie the game 1-1.

Westfield State took control of the contest with a 6-0 run to end the first half with a 7-1 lead.

The second half was much of the same, as the Owls started the half with a 6-0 run for a total of 12 unanswered goals before Falcons' Long scored on a feed from Gagnon-Burch to make it 13-2.

Fitchburg State would find the back of the net once more at 3:08 with a goal from Napolitano to trim the final margin to 13-3.

The Falcons held a 24-21 advantage in total shots while the Owls' held a 12-6 advantage in draw controls.

Woodall played the first 56 minutes in net for Westfield State allowing only two goals and earning her eighth win of the season. Freshman teammate Emma Duffy (Braintree, Mass.) finished the final 3:35 minutes in net and allowed one goal.

Junior goalkeeper Marguerite Belcher (Quincy, Mass. / North Quincy) made six saves in the loss.

Westfield State will host Springfield College in a non-conference game on April 4th at 7:00 p.m.

Fitchburg State will travel to UMass Dartmouth on April 4th for a game at 7:00 p.m.
