Lambert Lifts Owls Past Lyons, 15-13


ENGLEWOOD, Fla. - Westfield State University's junior Sydney Lambert (Hanover, Mass.) scored three goals to help lift the Owls past Wheaton College 15-13 in a women's lacrosse non-conference game at Dever Park in Englewood, Florida Tuesday morning.

The Owls improve to 4-0 on the season while the Lyons are now 1-2 overall.

Westfield State's junior Alexa Tonelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) notched two goals as the Owls took a 5-0 lead in the first ten minutes of play. Lyons' junior Maddy Lahm (Lyme, Conn.) responded with one of her own at 14:22 to make it 5-1.

Owls' sophomore Maddie Bartkus (Marshfield, Mass.) found the back of the net at 12:44 to increase the lead to 6-1. Less than a minute later, Lyons' junior Kennelly Allerton (Unionville, Conn.) scored a free position goal to decrease the Owls' lead by four.

Westfield State held an 8-5 advantage to end the first half.

Wheaton College opened the second half with two goals in the first seven minutes before Westfield State went on a 6-0 run with back to back goals from Lambert (22:17, 20:53) and sophomore Sam Donohoe (Pepperell, Mass. / North Middlesex Regional) (19:31, 18:04). Junior Elizabeth Navoni (Mansfield, Mass.) and senior Rachel Testa (Westminster, Mass. / Oakmont) then scored less than a minute apart to lead Wheaton College 14-7.

From there, the Lyons chipped away at the lead and went on a 6-1 run in the final 16 minutes of play. Westfield State's advantage proved to be too large, as the Owls clinched the 15-13 victory.

For the game, Wheaton held a 40-34 advantage in shots and also had the advantage in ground balls, 19-15.

Owl's junior goalkeeper Maria Woodall (Norfolk, Mass. / King Philip) earned the victory and made 18 saves in net.

Freshman Jena Casman (Woodbridge, Conn.) played the first 40 minutes in net for the Lyons, making nine saves while senior Molly Witten (Bethesda, MD) played the final 20 minutes and made two saves.

The Owls will play Vassar College on Thursday, March 15th at Ross Park in Port Charlotte, Florida at 9:00 a.m.
