Women's Basketball Tips Off at Home in the Westfield Gas and Electric Tip Off Tournament

WESTFIELD Ma – The Westfield Owls women's basketball team tip off at home for the first time this season as they host the Westfield Gas and Electric Tip Off Tournament this weekend on Friday, November 17, and Saturday, November 18. 

The Westfield Gas and Electric Tip Off Tournament begins with the Owls first home game of the 2023-2024 season on Friday November 17 at 5:30 p.m. against Regis College. The second game on Friday will begin at 7:30 p.m. as Eastern Connecticut State University takes on Muhlenberg College. 

The consolation and championship games will be played on Saturday November 18 with the consolation game set to tip off at noon and the championship game tipping off at 2 p.m. 

Westfield State enters the tip off tournament 1-1. For the Owls the return of lead scorers, senior Jordan Grant (Gray, ME), senior Olivia Hadla (Westfield, MA), and sophomore Octaviana Williams (Springfield, MA) look to lead the team back to the MASAC Championship. The Owls finished their season 18-10 overall, falling to the #1 seeded Bridgewater State in the MASCAC Championship last season. 

Picking up where she left off last season, Grant leads the team in scoring, averaging 16 points per game as well as leading the team in rebounds with 7.5 rebounds per game. Grant led the team last season averaging 16 points per game and grabbed 6.4 rebounds per game. She earned first team MASCAC All Conference recognition last season, as well as being named to New England Women's Basketball Association All-Region Fourth Team. 

Hadla enters the tip off tournament as the second leading scorer for the Owls as she is averaging 15.5 points per game and averaging four rebounds. Her 21 points against Plymouth State University is the highest scoring performance for the Owls thus far. Last season, Hadla led the league in three-pointers made per game (2.5), and finished sixth in the league in scoring and fifth in steals. She earned second team MASCAC All Conference recognition. 

Sophomore guard Octaviana Williams enters the tip off tournament coming off her sharp shooting game against Plymouth State University where she went 4-4 from the field, totaling eight points and collecting six rebounds. 

Regis College enters the tip-off tournament at 0-2 on the season. The Pride finished the season last year 12-13 overall making it to the GNAC quarterfinal. For the Pride, sophomore forward Madi Zacan (Cumberland, R.I.) leads the team in points per game, averaging 20 points between the first two games, putting up 27 points in their season opener loss to Wellesley College. Senior guard Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn) leads the team in assists, averaging 6.5 assists, and is the Pride's second leading scorer averaging 14.5 points per game. 

The Eastern Connecticut State Warriors enter the tip-off tournament 1-0 after their overtime win against Lasell University. The Warriors were led by junior center Taylor Salato (East Haven, CT) who scored 27 points in the opener. Junior guard Kya Mayo (Middletown, CT) scored 13 points. The Warriors finished their season last year 22-6 overall, making it to the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament. 

The Muhlenberg College Mules enter into the tip off tournament 2-0, led by their top scorer junior Ava Connolly (Arlington, MA), who is averaging 15 points per game on the season. Junior Rachel Saxton (Doylestown, Pa) is the second-leading scorer for the Mules averaging 10 points per game and three rebounds. The Muhlenberg College Mules finished their season last year 13-13 overall, making it to Centennial Conference quarterfinals.
