Softball Splits Two, Defeats Smith 4-2


WESTFIELD, Mass. - Westfield State University's softball team topped Smith College 4-2 in a non-conference doubleheader at Alumni Field Monday afternoon.

The Pioneers topped the Owls 9-8 in game two.

Westfield State is now 11-17 on the season while Smith College moves to an overall record of 6-27.

With both teams tied 1-1 in the first inning of the opening game, Owls' junior Karly Mastello (Russell, Mass. / Westfield) hit an RBI single to take the 2-1 lead.

Senior Angelica Banning (East Granby, Conn. / Suffield) hit a two-run single to extend Westfield's lead to 4-1.

Smith College's Elodie Townsend (Mill Valley, Calif. / Tamalpais) drove in a run in the fifth inning to make it 4-2.

Freshman Emily Arredondo (Woburn, Mass.) got the win for the Owls going seven innings and allowing two runs on 11 hits.

Rowan Turner (Kansas City, Kan. / Shawnee Mission East) took the pitching loss in game one going six innings and allowing four runs on 10 hits.

The Pioneers turned things around in game two, scoring six runs in a decisive first inning.

Westfield State responded with four runs of their own in the second and third innings to drive in freshman Jackie Reynolds (Middleborough, Mass.), junior Kayla Soucie (North Easton, Mass. / Oliver Ames), senior Maddy Atkocaitis (Westfield, Mass.), and junior Caitlin Hughes (Hanson, Mass.) to make it 6-4.

A ground-out to second base allowed Smith College's Jessica Flohr (Foster Coty, Calif. / Crystal Springs Upland School) to score. Pioggia followed with a two-RBI single that gave the Pioneers a 9-4 lead in the fourth inning.

Westfield State tacked on four more runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings on an RBI triple from Atkocaitis, a sacrifice fly from Hughes, a groundout to short stop, and an RBI single from Banning making it 9-8, but the Owls weren't able to find another scoring opportunity.

Emily Woodworth (Marlborough, Mass.) was in the circle for the Owls in game two, going five innings and allowing nine runs on 10 hits.

The Owls will travel to MCLA on Tuesday, April 24th for a conference double header beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Smith College will host Williams College on April 27th in a non-conference double header at 4:00 p.m.
