Softball Splits Two, Defeat Gordon 9-7

CLERMONT, Fla. - Westfield State softball picked up its first win of the season on Monday, topping Gordon College, 9-7 to split a pair of games on the day.

Westfield scored four runs in the third inning and five in the fourth.

Maddy Atkocaitis drove in a pair of runs in the third inning with a single, and scored on Karly Mastello's single.

Atkocaitis drove in two more in the fifth with a double, and Mastello followed with an RBI triple as the Owls built a 9-0 lead.

Mastello, Kayla Soucie, and Bri Tortora each had three hits for Westfield. Emily Woodworth pitched a complete game for the Owls, scattering 12 hits and striking out four to earn her first win of the season.

In the opener, Westfield fell to nationally #7 ranked Amherst by a 9-1 score in five innings. Four errors plagued the Owls who allowed six unearned runs in the contest.

Amherst struck for four runs in the first, fueled by a leadoff triple to left field from Andrea Sanders, and added two in the third and three in the fourth inning.

Westfield scored its run in the top of the fifth with Kaitlyn Prophet scoring on the back end of a double steal attempt.

Mastello rapped a pair of hits for the Owls.

Lorena Unkenwa (2-0) picked up the win for Amherst, while Emily Arredondo (0-2) took the loss for Westfield.
