Softball Drops Opening Pair

MINNEOLA, Fla. - Westfield State softball lost its opening two games of the Spring Games, falling 5-1 to New England College and 9-1 in 8 innings to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

In the night cap, Westfield got a strong pitching performance from sophomore Emily Woodworth, who limited the Engineers to just one run on four hits through seven innings as the two teams went to the international tiebreaker in the eighth inning.

The Engineers sacrifice bunted the runner to third, with the bunter reaching on an error. Christine White followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, and Veronica DeStefano scored from third, her slide to the outside of the baseline evading the tag to score what would prove to be the game winning run.

RPI added a three-run home run from Allie Hunt, as the wheels came off the bus late for the Owls en route to the 9-1 final.

For Westfield, Angelica Banning finished with two hits, including a triple. Westfield scored its run in the bottom of the first inning as Maddy Atkocaitis singled to score Bri Tortora.

In the season opener, New England College got a single run in the fourth and then four in the sixth. Westfield scored its run in the top of the seventh as Tortora singled home Kait Prophet. Freshman starter Emily Arredondo took the loss, allowing three earned runs in six innings of work.

Prophet finished with three hits for the Owls.
