Westfield, Mass. – Westfield State first-year midfielder Nick Brown (Southwick, Mass.) scored his team-leading third goal of the season as the Owls edged Mass. Maritime (3-8, 2-2 MASCAC), 1-0, on the road on Friday night. In the 25th minute, the Owls found a break on an errant back pass from the Bucs that went to junior Ryan Cassidy (West Springfield, Mass.) on the outside. He delivered the ball into the box for Brown who chipped the shot over the head of Bucs goalkeeper John Murphy (Braintree, Mass.) for the goal. The victory was the Owls first conference win of the season.

Owls goalkeeper Emilio Mancuso (Ludlow, Mass.) kept the Buccaneers at bay, recording nine saves, six of which were on net in the first half. Mass. Maritime held the advantage in shots, 20-8, and shots on net, 9-3, but a stout defensive effort kept the Buccaneers off the scoreboard.

Westfield State (4-8, 1-3 MASCAC) will look to carry their momentum into next week as the Owls will wrap up a three game road trip at Williams College on Wednesday at 7:00 P.M. before returning home on Homecoming weekend to face Bridgewater State. Mass. Maritime will host Mitchell College on Tuesday at 7:00 P.M.
