CASTLETON, Vt. - The Castleton men's soccer team earned a 3-0 victory over Westfield State Tuesday evening at Dave Wolk Stadium thanks to stingy defense and a strong offensive output.

The Owls (3-8-0, 0-3-0 MASCAC) were able to hold off the Castleton (3-8-0, 1-2-0 LEC) attack for the majority of the first half, but the Spartans opened the scoring in the 39th minute thanks to senior captain Jacob Godfrey. Ben Stewart sent a free kick before Godfrey made contact and headed it home from 10 yards out. It marked Godfrey's first of the year, while Stewart has three assists in the past two contests.

The Spartans possessed the ball through most of the opening half as Andres Soto-Burgos didn't see any save opportunities, though he'd finish the contest with two. Soto-Burgos earned his second shutout of the season.

Castleton tallied its next goal in the 59th minute, courtesy of Stanley Andersen. Jacob Barth ripped a shot before a Westfield State block sent a one-time opportunity to Andersen, who tucked a rocket just inside the right post.

Charlie Cisneros tacked on the evening's third goal in the 72nd minute. Nifty ball movement from Jacob Henderson, along with Godfrey, landed Cisneros a one-on-one opportunity. He converted, sending a dribbler just out of reach of Westfield State's Griffin Brown

Castleton held a 21-12 edge in total shots, and a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.   Brown finished with five saves for the Owls.

Westfield will return to conference action on Friday evening, traveling to Mass Maritime for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
