Men’s Golf Places Fifth at MASCAC Championship

WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Westfield State men's golf team finished fifth at the MASCAC Championship from The Meadow at Peabody golf course in Peabody, Mass. this weekend.

Andrew Mason shot the low round of the two-day tournament for the Owls with a 164 (+20) to place 14th individually. Thomas Onoarato moved up a spot on day two as the next lowest score for Westfield by shooting 178 (+34). The Owls as a team shot 736 on the weekend to place fifth.

Springfield claimed the 2023 MASCAC Men's Golf Championship. The Pride, coming off a strong day one performance, held off MCLA and two-time defending champion Salem State to earn their second MASCAC title since joining the league in 2019. Springfield (302, 321, +33), finished ahead of runner-up MCLA (320, 324, +36) while Salem State placed third (313, 332, +44).

MCLA standout rookie Mat Gover (Atkinson, N.H.) earned individual medalist honors, shooting a 76 on day two to go with a 71 (-1) on Saturday for a +3, 147 to beat out Springfield's David Girourd  (Chicopee, Mass.) by six strokes, (75, 78, 153 +9) and Salem State's Ethan Doyle (Salem, Mass.), who ended with a (72, 81, 153 +9). 

Gover also earned MASCAC Rookie of the Year honors, while The BSN Sports Coach of the Year was awarded to Joe Eadie of Springfield.

Westfield State will compete next at the Warrior Invitational hosted by Eastern Connecticut State University on Wednesday, October 11.
