Owls Host Brett Williamson Invitational

WESTFIELD, Mass. -  MCLA's Matt Gover shot a 1-over par 72 to win the Brett Williamson Invitational Tournament hosted by Westfield State University at Tekoa Country Club on Wednesday.

Gover made three birdies and four bogeys in the round, blitzing the front nine of the course in a 2-under 34.

For Gover it was his fourth tournament win this year.

Eastern Connecticut State took home the team title for the third straight year with a team score of 321.  Chris Davidson led the way for the Warriors with a 76, and Matt Orefice delivered a 79 out of the five spot for Eastern.

MCLA and New England College tied for second with score of 325.

Westfield State was led by Andrew Wands, who shot an 85.  He was joined by Andrew Mason (86) Tom Onorato (87), Jack Corsi (88) and Nick Coelho (98) in the Owls starting lineup for the season opener.  The Owls split the field in the 10-team meet, placing fifth with a team total of 346.

The players had perfect weather with temps in the low 70s and clear skies, on the 6,438-yard, par-71 course that includes a blend of four original Donald Ross designed holes with 14 more from Geoffrey Cornish.

Dean College's Michael Keefe was second in the individual scoring with a 74, followed by Davidson (76) and Rhode Island College's Jasper Bruin-Slot in fourth with a 77.

Westfield State will next compete in the MASCAC Championships, on Saturday, Sept. 30 and Sunday Oct. 1, hosted by Salem State University.
