WESTFIELD, Mass.  –  Junior Brandon Smith (Feeding Hills/Agawam, Mass.) was the low man for Westfield State with a 79, but he finished 1-stroke off the tournament title as the Owls' men's golf team placed second at their Westfield State Spring Invitational at Tekoa Country Club on Tuesday.

Smith opened the day with a par save on the 18th hole (his first hole of the day), but finished with a double-bogey on 17 to finish one shot back of individual champion Anthony Loiselle (Providence, RI/Country Day) of Rhode Island College, who carded a 78 to win the event on a cool and drizzly spring day at the 6,438 yard, par-71 Ross/Cornish-designed course.

Loiselle's solid round (10 pars and one birdie) also helped propel the Anchormen to the team title with a team total of 328, two strokes better than the Owls.   Albertus Magnus was third with 341, and Worcester State rounded out the four-team field with a score of 363.

Westfield's scoring four included Kyle DelSignore (Attleboro, Mass.) (T3-80) Michael Waldman (Billerica, Mass.) (10th -85) and J.J. Newcombe (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone Valley) (11th-86).

Westfield will be back in action tomorrow, playing the Rich Korzec Memorial Tournament, hosted by Worcester State at Blackstone National Golf Club in Sutton, Mass.
