Owls Golf Takes Second at MASCAC Preview Meet

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State University's J.J. Newcombe (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone Valley HS)  and Brandon Smith (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) tied for second place in the individual results with a pair of 4-over par 76's at the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Preview tournament at Berkshire Hills Country Club in Pittsfield, Mass.

Westfield State placed second as a team with score 322, nine strokes behind the tournament champs from Salem State.  Mitchell College was third at 331.

The tournament sets the tone for the 2021-22 season, where the MASCAC Conference championship team will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Golf Championships. 

The preview tourney allows all the teams to have an opportunity to play the course under tournament conditions while sizing up the competition in advance of the league championship meet, which will be held at BHCC on Oct.  4-5, 2021. 

Kyle DelSignore (Attleboro, Mass.) (84) Mike Waldman (Billerica, Mass.)  (86) and Chris Ervin (North Chelmsford, Mass./ Chelmsford) (87) rounded out the Owls quintet today on the 6,500-yard, 1925 A.W. Tillinghast-designed course. (Note: Tillinghast designed many notable courses, including Baltrusol, Bethpage, and Winged Foot).

Salem State's Matt Godbout fired the low round of the day with a 75 to earn medalist honors.  The Vikings' Ethan Doyle finished in three-way tie for second with Westfield's Newcombe and Smith.

Westfield State will host the fourth annual Brett Williamson Invitational Tournament on Sept. 23 at Tekoa Country Club in Westfield.
