CHICOPEE - The Westfield State College men's varsity golf team captured the championship in the four-team Blazer Invitational hosted by Elms College at the Chicopee Country Club on Tuesday, Sept. 16.

It was a very good debut for the Owls, who were playing their first varsity match in 20 years. Men's golf was suspended as a varsity sport at Westfield State following the 1988 season.

The Owls' top four golfers fired an aggregate score of 314 to easily outdistance Elms (343), Mitchell College (358) and Newbury (381).

Westfield State freshman Dan Korpita of Southampton (Hampshire Regional High School) tied Elms' Ben Kwiatkowski for the top spot with a 77. Korpita lost the playoff for low medalist when he hit the ball out of bounds on the first playoff hole.

Shooting 78s for the Owls were junior Chris McCarthy of Westfield and freshman Nate Luippold of Greenfield. Sophomore Brett Williamson of Ludlow shot an 81.
