Owls Match School Record, Top Elms 10-2

WESTFIELD, Mass. –   Westfield State junior midfielder Emily Martin (Southwick, Mass.) scored a career-best four goals and added an assist, as Westfield State matched a school record for goals in a game as the Owls topped Elms College, 10-2 in a the Owls home opener at Alumni Field.

Westfield (2-1) unloaded 38 total shots on the Blazers, breaking through in the 8th minute as Martin scored on a shot through traffic from about seven yard out on the right side.    Kayleigh Murphy (Pembroke, Mass.) added the Owls' second goal just 44 seconds later.

Westfield scattered the scoring around as Skyla Harthcock (Martha's Vineyard, Mass.) came off the bench to add three goals and an assist.

Lindsey Spindel (Mendon, Mass./Nipmuc) and Madison Ouellette (Uxbridge, Mass.) added the other goals for the Owls.

Elms (0-2) got a penalty stroke goal from Katie Jones (San Diego, Calif.) in the 47th minute after the Owls had tried to clear a shot off the line, and then Tamara Edwards (Enfield, Conn.) scored on a breakaway off of a long lead pass from Julianna Morrisette.

Martin netted the final goal for the Owls with 3:50 left in regulation, as the team tied a 41-year old record for goals in a game, matching the mark of 10 set against Western New England in 1981.

Kaitlyn Lynes (S. Hadley, Mass.)  made 12 saves in goal for Elms, Katelyn Volk (Warwick, R.I.) came on make one save in relief.

Westfield State will be back in action on Saturday at Western Connecticut with a noon start.
