Golden Bears Top Westfield, 3-1

Golden Bears Top Westfield, 3-1

WESTFIELD, Mass.  – Lana Felice scored one goal and assisted on another as Western New England topped Westfield State, 3-1 in a non-conference field hockey match at Alumni Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Bears got on the board first when Felice (Pawling, N.Y.) sent a shot rifling into the back of the net after a nice between-the-legs feed from Jessica Clifford (Auburn, Mass.) to make it 1-0 Western New England.

Most of the play in the first half was closely contested, with both teams providing scoring chances left and right. Western New England did hold the edge in shots, however, outshooting the Owls 8-6.

Only seven minutes into the second half, Western New England would extend their lead to 2-0 when Felice sent a ball into a scrum in front of the net that would be picked up by teammate Halle Harvey (Millers Falls, Mass.) who sent one past the dive of Owls goalkeeper Riley Goulet (Marion, Mass.) for the score.

The Golden Bears would tack on another midway through the second half, this time by the stick of Ali Larochelle (New Boston, N.H.) to make it 3-0 and secure the victory for Western New England.

Westfield finally got on the board in the closing minutes of the game, as freshman Allie Giguere (Bishop Fenwick/Lynn, Mass.) scored off of a rebound of a teammates shot for her eighth goal of the season.

The Golden Bears would outshoot the Owls 7-3 in the second half, controlling much of the play and scoring chances. Goulet would finish with 10 saves on 13 shots faced for the Owls, while Dana Dufour (Gloucester, Mass.) would make one save for the Golden Bears, thanks to two defensive saves by her defenders.

With the win, Western New England improves to 7-11, while Westfield State drops to 6-12.

The Owls travel to Fitchburg State for their final Little East matchup of the season on Saturday, with action beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Western New England visits Nichols College on Friday for their last regular season match, starting at 7:00 p.m.
