WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State junior quarterback Colby Pires (Milford, Mass.) brought home the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week honors this week for his performance against Western New England University this past Saturday.

In his first game as an Owl, Pires went 13 of 26 for 157 yards including a 33-yard touchdown pass during a 38-14 loss to the Golden Bears in the annual Presidents Cup game.

Pires transferred to Westfield State from UMass, though he did not play for the Minutemen.

For Westfield, it was the second straight week an Owls player has won the Rookie of the Week award as first-year cornerback Bearett Henderson (Gardner, Mass.) earned conference honors the week before with his two defensive scores. 

Pires and Westfield State will look to bounce back in their next game on Friday, September 16 as the Owls face Western Connecticut State at Alumni Field in the conference opener with kickoff set for 7:00 P.M.
