WESTFIELD, Mass. –   Jordan Smith (Coventry, Conn.) and Michael Foley (S. Windsor, Conn.) scored second-half touchdowns for Westfield State, but Western New England University did all they damage they needed in the first half, as the Golden Bears downed Westfield State 38-14 in the annual Presidents' Cup rivalry game at Golden Bear Stadium in Springfield on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Bears scored on their first six drives of the game to stake themselves to a 38-0 lead with 9:07 left in the second quarter.

WNE QB Tyler Millerick threw touchdown passes to three different receivers, on scoring strikes of 41, 11, and 35 yards.  He finished 12-19 passing for 194 yards with three TD's, and was also the Bears leading rusher with 46 yards on 10 carries.  AJ Hall caught three passes for 75 yards.

For Westfield, junior QB Colby Pires (Milford, Mass.)  came on in relief of Gabriel Fernandez (Holyoke, Mass.), and Pires completed 13 of 26 throws for 156 yards and a touchdown while engineering both of the Owls scoring drives.

Smith scored the Owls first touchdown on a 6-yard run, and added seven catches for 52 yards.

Foley caught a 33-yard scoring strike from Pires to cap the scoring, among his three catches for 95 yards on the day.

Western New England out-gained the Owls 409-217, ran 80 offensive plays to the Owls 57, and held seven-minute edge in time of possession.

Linebacker Tyler Cooley (Randolph, Mass.) led the Owls with 11 tackles, with DT Cade Nelson (Shrewsbury, Mass.) adding eight stops, including one for a loss.

WNE improves to 1-1 on the season with the win, while Westfield is now 0-2.  The Owls will host Western Connecticut State next Friday evening to kick off MASCAC conference play.
