WESTFIELD, Mass.  – Westfield State University linebacker Andrew Carpenter (Auburn, Mass.) has been named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All District team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Carpenter will now go on the ballot for the Academic All-America ® Team.

Carpenter, a graduate student in the University's Masters of Public Administration program, returned for a fifth year of eligibility as a result of a medical redshirt year.   He graduated last year with a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice, graduating with a 3.93 grade point average.   He was named the athletic department's Male Senior Scholar Athlete of the year in 2018, graduating with the highest grade-point average among all student athletes at Westfield State.

On the field Carpenter patrolled the middle linebacker spot for the Owls, finishing the year with 64 tackles, half a sack, and a fumble recovery.  The Westfield State led the conference in rushing defense, allowing opponents just 110 yards per game.

Carpenter battled through several knee injuries in his career to compete for Westfield State.

The Owls finished the year with a 5-5 overall record and a 4-4 mark in the MASCAC.

Carpenter is the first Owl football player selected for the team since Greg Sheridan and Troy Cutter were named to the All-District teams in 2014.

Carpenter was a District I selection, encompassing teams from Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire.  The team includes student-athletes from MIT, WPI, Middlebury, Amherst and Colby College among other schools.  Carpenter is one of just two selections from public institutions.

The 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Football Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The Google Cloud Academic All-America® program separately recognizes football honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot. First- and second-team (if applicable) Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early December.
