Owls Fall to Nationally-Ranked LaGrange

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – The Westfield State baseball team dropped their second game of their spring break trip in a 20-3 loss to #2/#8 ranked LaGrange in a neutral site game from USA Stadium Complex in Millington, Tenn. on Saturday afternoon.

The Owls fall to 1-2 on the season while LaGrange improves to 9-5 overall.

The Panthers began the game with a three-run first inning beginning with an RBI walk from Matt Eden (Orange Park, Fla.). Jared Aldridge (Carrollton, Ga.) followed with a two-run single on a line drive to left which plated Joe Ruth (Chiefland, Fla.) and Noah Preuer (Peachtree City, Ga.).

Westfield scored their first run of the game in the second inning on a towering solo home run to left-center field from Nick Marshall (Reading, Mass.). After the home run, the game entered a weather delay that lasted nearly two hours.

After returning from the delay, the Panthers opened the game up, posting a nine-run second inning with Ruth securing bookend doubles to drive in three runs in the rally. LaGrange led 10-1 after two innings of play.

LaGrange tacked on an additional run in the third, then seven more in the sixth inning to finish the scoring outburst.

Westfield scored two runs in the top of the seventh with Jake Butler (Westfield, Mass.) collecting an RBI on a fielder's choice, then Robison Guerrero Baez (Dominican Republic) recorded a run-scoring single to right to conclude the game.

Ryan Donahue (Medfield, Mass.) got the start for the Owls, only pitching one inning due to the extended rain delay.

Dalton Brooks (Sharpsburg, Ga.) picked up his second victory for LaGrange, pitching four innings while allowing only two baserunners with seven strikeouts. Rhett Mixon (Loganville, Ga.) generated a five-hit game while tallying four RBI. Ruth, Aldridge, and Gabriel Pallo (Melbourne, Fla.) all amounted three RBI.

Westfield State will continue on their spring break trip, facing off against Centenary (La.) tomorrow at 12:00 P.M. EST/11:00 A.M.CST from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn.
